Strategy: The
overall game plan
Tactics: How to implement the planned strategy.
Two basic strategies:
AGGRESSIVE PLAY
CONSISTENT PLAY
AGGRESSIVE PLAY: The 2 Ways to achieve this
strategy, as follows:
a) Using sheer power from the baseline to overpower
the opponent.
b) By coming into the net to finish off the point up
there.
The elements needed to succeed utilizing this
tactics:
• Powerful shots. Both grounds stokes well
developed.
• Big serve to set up the point
• Aggressive second serve return
• Being comfortable playing close and/ or inside the
baseline. Also from � of the court as well.
• Ability to take the ball on the rise.
• Well developed transition from defense to offense.
• Ability to change the direction of the ball
rapidly and accurately.
• Pinpoint accuracy on shots.
• Fearless mentality.
• Physically strong and tall.
• Swinging volley.
• Solid overhead smash.
• Awareness to attack when the opponent is in a
vulnerable position.
• Solid and confident transition game to go to the
net.
CONSISTENT PLAY: The 4 Ways to achieve this
strategy, as follows:
a) Keeping the ball in play anywhere on the court,
to outlast the opponent.
b) Ability to hit all the shots towards one specific
side of the court (e.g. opponent’s
backhand) to breakdown this wing, and perhaps attack
the other side later in the point.
c) Ability to move the opponent around the court to
wear them out, without trying to hit winner shots.
d) Ability to constantly vary the shots (spin,pace,location,height,depth)
The elements needed to succeed utilizing these
tactics:
• Great footwork and great overall conditioning, to
play long points.
• A lot of patient!!! Tolerance during long rallies
The willingness to fight.
• Great concentration and persistence.
• Spin well development for control and variety as
well.
• Good length on shots.
• Great defensive game.
• Pinpoint accuracy on cross court shots (high
percentage shots)
• Solid down the middle return of serve.
• Spin serve well developed (both slice and topspin)
• Ability and awareness to execute drop shots.
• Ability to neutralize the opponent power.
• Ability to change the direction of the ball during
rallies.
